Biogas an alternative fuel
Posted on: December 21st, 2007 by adminWith ever decreasing fossil fuels and concerns about the secured supply of energy and fossil fuels, a lot many types of renewable energy looks viable. Since 90% of Britain’s gas is imported, renewable sources of energy are something that everyone needs to look at.
One of the best ways to cut down on the consumption of electricity is to make the farmer self reliant in producing power as well becoming profitable suppliers of Biogas suppliers. But the advise from experts has been that farmers should not just sell the power generated to the electricity distribution companies. Their advice is for the farmer to keep control of the entire energy development chain from growing the Raw Material to sending the power into the national grid.
According to experts, Britain is far behind Europe and probably the rest of the world in the biofuels league and even fall behind countries like Latvia and Slovenia. But by choosing the right form of production we can start to redress the balance. Even production of Bio diesel and Bio ethanol can work on a massive scale and most of the plants in UK will be run on imported feedstock from countries like Indonesia and Malaysia
Biogas is considered one of the most efficient forms of fuels to run cars. A test drive on a mini showed that it can run 97,000 km on a hectare’s worth of fuel. By putting a 400ha (1000acre) arable unit down to crops to feed a farm-scale bio-gas plant in 2006, farmers could have generated nearly £10,000 additional net profit. Add to this the benefit of using the slurry as a fertilizer.
