British Gas is part of the Centrica group which was formed following a merger in 1997. British Gas is Britain’s largest supplier of electricity and gas to domestic customers. They also operate as Scottish Gas in Scotland and Nwy Prydain in Wales.
The British Gas website, house.co.uk, allows customers to manage their bills, arrange maintenance contracts for their heating, Gas boilers, gas fires, cookers and other domestic gas appliances, Using British gas for both your gas and electricity supply will entitle you to an extra discount.
In a bid to widen the range of services offered British Gas are also branching out into servicing plumbing and drains, kitchen appliance care, solar panels for heating water and even maintenance services aimed at landlords of rented properties.
They are keen to reduce costs and environmental impact; if you sign up for paperless billing they will send you four free low energy light bulbs.
The company is investing in renewable energy, they are investing in six major off shore wind farms around the coast of the UK. They are also looking into the use of biofuels to supply more conventional power stations.
At present 56% of their energy is generated by natural gas powered stations, 18% from coal, 20% nuclear and only 4% renewable sources, although this balance is set to change very soon.
