Ecotricity is a green electricity company, founded in 1996, making it one of the newer players in the energy market. They currently operate 13 wind farms (They call them wind parks) across the United Kingdom with four more under construction and nine more in the planning stage. They state that for every £1 spent by their customers they spend £1 building new sources of renewable energy.
Ecotricity even offer the chance for members of the public to visit their Ecotech centre in Norfolk and climb a 65 turbine to a viewing gallery.
They are also interested in solar energy, Hydro-electric and Wave energy and are even working towards further restoring the carbon balance by planting a forest in Gloucestershire, around their wind turbine site at Lynch Knoll. They have planted 20,000 trees, one for each of their first 20,000 customers. It is a mixed broadleaf forest consisting of Oak, Ash, Beech, Alder, Field maple, Birch, Hornbeam, Hazel, Holly and Dogwood.
Ecotricity will supply what they call “Merchant Wind Power” to organisations who whom they will build turbines, an example of this is the Ford Diesel Plant at Dagenham where they have built two 85 metre high turbines on the site.
They categorise energy as Deep Green, Pale Green and Conventional.
Deep Green is 100% renewable, such as Wind, solar, Hydro and Wave, Pale Green is Energy produced from biomass, sewage and landfill, Conventional covers the normal model for electricity generation such as coal, gas or nuclear.
