Eon are marketing their renewable energy supply with wide spread TV campaigns showing their off shore wind farms.

They offer 100% renewable energy supply to both business and domestic customers and are very keen to promote healthy lifestyles, this year they are sponsoring outdoor ice rinks in Nottingham and Coventry city centres.

They used to be known as Powergen
They are perhaps best known for being sponsors of the FA Cup

Their commitment to renewable energy is illustrated by their portfolio of wind farms and such projects as the Steven’s Croft Biomass power station at Lockerbie in Scotland. This is an interesting project as it finds a use for the waste left behind by the forestry industry, specially grown coppiced willow that has a very short growth cycle and other recycled fibre, specially dried, this material can be burned without releasing carbon deposits that have been locked up long term, as is the case with coal, oil and gas.

They will be using about 800 hectares of woodland around the plant, for every tree cut down they will plant three saplings.  The plant will provide employment locally and hope to reduce greenhouse gasses by 140,000 tonnes per year whilst producing 44 Megawatts of electricity.

They haven’t totally abandoned fossil fuel generation; there are plans to develop a new supercritical coal station at Kingsnorth where coal will be used to generate 1600 Megawatts, enough for about 1.5 million homes.  This new style cleaner coal station would produce approximately 2 million tonnes less carbon output than conventional coal stations.
