Revival of the Nuclear Industry.

Posted on: December 21st, 2007 by admin

In a sorts of revival for the atomic industry, Britain will soon join countries like Russia, India, China and the US when a decision is taken by the Government on the future of the nuclear power in the UK. That will send out a key signal to the rest of the world on the viability of the industry.

If it does happen then UK will be the third country in Europe that will be reviving its atomic industry. UK will join Russia, India, China and US in replacing its aging nuclear reactors.

However while the plan might revive the industry, the opposition to the plan has also increased tremendously. Greenpeace has already issued a formal warning to the British Government of a lengthy legal process if it endorsed the revival of the nuclear industry.

The European nuclear industry has become dormant after the disaster at Chernobyl in Ukraine in 1986, when an explosion killed thousands and contaminated a vast area. The exact figures of the deaths are not available yet.  But supporters of the industry are hoping for a renaissance as the world seeks to wean itself off fossil fuels blamed for global warming.

The Uk government has already given tactic support for the revival of nuclear power, which will help it meet the target of cutting CO2 emissions by 20% in 2020.

A total of 439 nuclear reactors are now operating worldwide, another 33 are under construction, 94 are planned and 222 more are proposed, according to the World Nuclear Association.

Around a fifth of the UK’s electricity needs are now met by nuclear, but this could change as most of the country’s nuclear and coal fired power stations reach the end of their working lives in the next 10 years.
