The energy supply ombudsman is an organisation that exists to mediate between customer and energy suppliers in the event of complaints that cannot be resolved by the supplier’s own customer care team.
The service is offered free of charge and on an independent basis. The y will not deal with matters relating to the physical supply of power, such as power cuts, companies who are not members of the scheme, employment issues within supplier companies, matters that are currently being pursued through the court system or complaints that they consider to be of a malicious nature.
The service went live on the 1st of July 2006; the ombudsman will only consider complaints that were registered with the supplier after that date. In the case of sales activity relating to the way that the service was sold to the customer they will only consider cases that were first registered on or after the 1st of September 2007.
The Ombudsman has the power to award compensation to customers in sums up to a maximum level of £5000. All rulings are binding on companies that are members of the scheme. In addition they can make rulings on the way that member companies operate their businesses.
Should a customer not wish to accept the ruling offered by the Ombudsman there is no further recourse within the industry, the next stage in the process is to go through the legal system.
