3 Geothermal Projects in the UK Receive £1.1 Million Funding

Posted on: December 29th, 2010 by Tessa Clarke

Reports now show that 3 projects in the UK have just recently been awarded a total of 1.1 million pounds to explore geothermal technologies. This marks the second round of the Department for Energy and Climate Change’s Deep Geothermal Challenge Fund.

The goal is to use natural heat found underground to heat homes and buildings. Overall, scientists think that they can use this deep geothermal energy to produce electricity for homes as well. According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, it is a non intermittent, low-carbon, renewable energy source. It could become a viable option for the UK in its plans to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

Greg Barker, who is the minister of state for energy and climate change, said that they are commented to this funding. He said that he wants to ensure that geothermal energy, which is both renewable and can be produced locally, can become one of the energy technologies of the future. There is really no reason why this kind of energy should not be used.

He went on to note that geothermal sources in the south-west of the UK could alone have the potential to meet two percent of the country’s annal electricity demand. Thus, it is easy to see just how effective geothermal energy can be.

Overall, the UK is going to have to fund a lot of different types of renewable energy in order to make sure that its energy needs are met. The country, just like other countries, will not be able to rely on just one type of renewable energy. It’s always better for a country to be getting their energy from multiple sources to keep them from becoming too dependent on one thing.
