Ahmedabad Municipal Uses Fuel Pellets To Recycle Waste

Posted on: July 28th, 2009 by Lynnette Adamson

Ahmedabad Municipal will launch a new project aimed at converting waste to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

The Indian civic company has signed an agreement with Creative, an innovative new waste management company based in Japan.  The $10.4 million deal will require that Creative convert waste products into environmentally safe pellets which can then be used to fuel power plants throughout the city.

The main goal of the project is to move the city into means of being energy self sustaining, however Ahmedabad Municipal is also expecting to receive carbon credits.  In 2008, India produced over 30 million carbon credits making it one of the largest receivers in the carbon credit market.

The project is expected to convert up to 800 metric tons of solid waste into biofuel a day at a waste recycling rate of up to 90%.  Creative hopes to have the project underway in the next 14 to 16 months.

Ahmedabad Municipal, which is accountable for the civic infrastructure and administration of Ahmedabad, Gujarati, produces 2,300 metric tons of solid waste daily.

India has been attempting to address major waste issues for some time now.  This project will help to alleviate some of the large amounts of solid waste produced in India.
