Airlines To Move Towards Green Alternatives For Air Travel
Posted on: July 24th, 2009 by Jason DrewPolicy Exchange, a UK based company, released recent research findings say that sustainable biofuels can reduce the carbon emissions of aircraft.
The findings are good news for Virgin Atlantic, which broke new ground in green travel when it lead the world’s first commercial flight fueled by biofuel from London Heathrow and Amsterdam in February 2008.
Policy Exchange concluded that: “Aviation is a fundamental part of the global economy and…..people throughout the world want to travel. As a result, we must promote methods that can reduce emissions from those flights that do take place.”
Virgin Atlantic helped found the Aviation Global Deal Group, which supports a global emissions tax to be paid by governments attending a joint summit at Copenhagen in December. Proceeds from the tax would go towards eco-friendly projects such as clean energy solutions. The eco-friendly airline also helped put into place the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group whose members provide funding for the development of fuels that leave a minimal carbon footprint.
Other airlines, like Boeing, are working with Virgin Atlantic to expand research on sustainable biofuels. Virigin Atlantic airlines, coupled with others in the market, are taking steps to ensure that air travel moves closer towards green alternatives by developing second and third generation biofuels that will decrease the carbon footprint left by aircraft.
