Alistair Darling Announces New Boiler Scrappage Scheme
Posted on: December 10th, 2009 by Tessa ClarkeJust recently Chancellor Alistair Darling addressed a few environmental issues in his speech. During this time he talked about some 125,000 new boilers and doubling the commitment to carbon capture and storage in the UK.
Apparently house owners will be able to trade in their old boilers for newer more efficient models under the new plan that was just recently announced by Alistair Darling. This plan is all part of an environmentally friendly measure that was unveiled in the government’s pre-budget report.
Alistair Darling went on to announce funding for carbon capture projects and new tax breaks for people who are generating their own electricity. The chancellor noted that Britain had to conserve more energy to cut carbon emissions.
Almost an extra £200 million will go into helping people make their homes more energy efficient. This will be done though measures such as adding more insulation. Overall, these improvements will not only help the UK reach its carbon emission goals, but it will help families and homeowners save money on their power bill.
The chief executive of the UK Green Building Council, Paul King, welcomed the new energy efficiency move. He said that this will help make homes more energy efficient and provide some support to the emerging low carbon refurbishing industry. He did note that they are still just tinkering around the edge of what is possible. Homeowners need help refurbishing their whole home and not just their boilers.
The Chief executive of the Energy Saving Trust, Philip Sellwood, said that there are around 4 million G rated gas boilers in the UK right now. If these were to all be replaced with A rated boilers, it would save almost 4.5 million tons of CO2 emissions per year. This is the equivalent of 830,000 homes’ emissions.
