All Eyes on United Nations Climate Change Conference

Posted on: November 5th, 2009 by Beth Williams

Right now one of the major concerns for people, as a whole, is global warming. Although this has always been an issue with people, the issue at hand has been brought more into light recently with very noticeable affects of global warming taking place. Thus, all eyes are now turned to December’s United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

Despite all the hopes that are being placed on the United Nations Climate Change Conference, some experts have pointed out that they feel that internationally negotiated climate agreements could become obsolete. These experts go on to point out that this could be due to two main reasons. First, they think that many governments do not want to work too closely with other governments on these matters. Second of all, with how long it takes these agreements to get the go ahead, the climate may just run out of time. Much damage has already been done, and changes have to happen now rather than later.

Many groups have already pointed out that saving the world is going to take some major cuts in carbon emissions. These same groups do point out that the good news is that the world does process the technology to make these cuts. Now the problem is mobilizing a plan for all the countries to use this technology.

Right now people are asking governments not to ask what kind of goals would be politically popular, but ask themselves what kind of goals would give everyone a decent shot at saving the world What kind of goals would keep Greenland’s ice sheet from melting away? These are the kinds of problems that the world faces if global warming is not dealt with.
