Beauly-Denny Power Line is Considered an Eye Sore
Posted on: January 8th, 2010 by Tessa ClarkePeople are now at a deadlock on whether or not to be happy about the new Beauly-Denny power line that will be going up in the Highlands of Scotland. Some are saying that this is nothing more than an eye sore, and it is going to ruin the beautiful landscape of the Scotland Highlands. However, some view this a bit differently.
For some, the approval of the Beauly-Denny power line through the Highlands of Scotland looks like a big victory in the battle against climate change. This is a very important upgrade in order to use a series of proposed renewable electric projects. These lines will be able to carry this power to the northern Scotland power grid. The Friends of the Earth in Scotland seem to agree. They say that the Highlands may be very beautiful, but this is a small price to pay when being faced with the current global crisis.
This project was kind of presented in unfair terms. For the most part, it was either the power line goes up or Scotland’s very ambitious renewable target goes up in smoke. This is something that the government was not willing to let happen.
However, others are quick to argue that it did not have to come down to this. They say that other alternative approaches existed but were not properly considered during the planning process. Some say that the line could have went under the North Sea and spared the Highlands altogether.
Of course, this brings up the question, who would have paid for it? According to reports, it would have cost a lot more to try and lay the wire underwater than it would to build it above ground. The people who want so badly to protect the Highlands would have more than likely not coughed up the money to build it underwater. Thus, the government chose to go the cheaper rout. After all, who can blame them. Some seem to forget that the economy is still in a recession.
