Big Freeze in UK Causes Travel and Food Crisis
Posted on: January 12th, 2010 by Justin BecksRight now the UK is being hit by one of the coldest winters they have seen in many years. One of the major concerns that has been going on are, of course, travel and energy. People are not able to travel to work, and many airports have to cancel flights. On top of this, people are having to use more energy to stay warm. However, amidst all of this, another problem is starting to show itself. However, this time it’s a food struggle.
Britons have been warned to brace themselves now for an increase in food prices as plunging temperatures leave farmers unable to harvest their vegetables. Thus, fresh produce is starting to run slim all over the UK and many suppliers are jacking up prices.
Gordon Brown was forced to reassure the country that it would not run out of gas, grit, or energy for its roads and homes during the coldest weather the country has seen in 30 years. Police have also confirmed that the weather-related death toll has risen to 26. Just recently a 90-year-old woman froze to death in her garden near Barnsley after falling in the snow. This widow was finally discovered by her neighbor when she came around to make the older woman some tea. On top of this, a 42-year-old Newcastle woman died after being found lying in the snow earlier this week. She had told her family that she was going for a walk.
Of course, energy and gas are not the only problems now. Food supply is becoming very critical due to the sub zero temperatures. Producers of brussel sprouts and cabbages are reporting problems with their harvest. Cauliflowers have already turned to mush in the frost. Now that the UK is having to import food and energy, some of these foods could be rising up to more than £2 each
