Britain to be turned into Saudi Arabia of wind

Posted on: June 29th, 2008 by Emma Young

British Prime Minister has disclosed that his government will give encouragement to energy utilities to develop seven thousand wind energy turbines as part of the efforts to decrease the dependency of Britain on fossil fuels as well as a way of reducing the carbon dioxide emissions.
Gordon Brown summed it up all saying that if the goal was achieved wind energy would be to Britain what oil is to Saudi Arabia.

The announcement made by Gordon Brown suggest the government faces an uphill task in trying to meet the European Union target of generating fifteen per cent of the electricity consumed in Britain from renewable sources such as wind and solar by the year 2020. Currently only about four per cent of the electricity generated from Britain is generated from renewable sources.

The British Prime Minister added that the industrial sector in the United Kingdom would have to put approximately one hundred billion sterling pounds in the coming twelve years in an effort to lower the carbon emissions. The British Prime Minister added that it was projected that generation of power from wind energy would lead to the creation of approximately one hundred and sixty thousand employment opportunities in the United Kingdom in the coming twelve years. Another one hundred thousand employment opportunities would be created in the development of new nuclear power generation facilities in the coming twelve years also.

The director of Greenpeace, an environmental lobby group, John Sauven, concurred with the prime minister that not only would generating electricity whittle down the dependence on fossil fuels but also generate new employment opportunities.
