Britain to exploit loophole
Posted on: March 31st, 2008 by Emma YoungBritain is in a quest to amend the laws governing renewable energy targets to enable it achieve its commitment to boost clean energy.
Currently only three per cent of the electricity generated in the United Kingdom comes from renewable energy sources but ministers have concurred to raise this by five times within the next twelve years. To ensure the achievement of this goal, the government has begun lobbying the European Union over the method the target is computed.
During a previous closed session of the energy council of ministers, Lady Vadera, the Business Minister suggested that British investments in renewable sources of energy anywhere in the globe should be considered as part of United Kingdom’s endeavours.
In a speech which surprised renewable energy firms in Europe, environment groups and other European Union energy ministers, Lady Vadera argued that it was imperative for cost-efficiency be at the heart of their approach and that demand for renewable energy projects outside the borders of the European Union should count as portion of the renewable energy target.
Lady Vadera also urged Europe to let all European Union countries to compute carbon saved from coal-powered stations fitted with equipment that captures dangerous greenhouse gas emissions. The electricity produced from such coal-powered stations would then be considered as renewable energy and go towards meeting UK national targets.
However environmental groups were quick to accuse Britain of trying to postpone or reduce investments on increasing renewable energy projects.
The Chief Executive of Ecotricity which is UK’s largest wind farm company warned that the proposals would kill renewable energy in Britain.
