Britain To Generate Energy From The Sea

Posted on: March 27th, 2008 by Emma Young

A new era will be ushered in in Britain when energy starts being generated from the seas. An unusual one hundred and twenty two feet long mechanical device will be deployed on the sea to produce electricity from the British tides.

The gadget, which is unique and has not been seen anywhere else on earth, is expected to usher in an era where the island nation will be sourcing close to twenty per cent of its power from the waters that surround it.

The device which is the first of its kind will start generating power from tidal energy which is considered a fairly clean and predictable source. The device was created by a single engineer and developed by a small firm in the west. It received some government support recently though previously ministers have opted to invest in much larger projects such as nuclear reactors.

The setting up of the device close to Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough will occur only days after Nicolas Sarkozy the French President and Prime Minister Gordon Brown sign a partnership deal for the joint construction of a new generation of nuclear reactors.

After the tidal turbine which is known as SeaGen is launched, it will produce enough electricity to provide one thousand one hundred and forty households with power. Experts are already excited about the technology saying it is a big step forward in the exploitation of marine energy.

Another first for the world will be witnessed later in the year when a power station producing power from wave energy is set up in the Atlantic Ocean off the Portuguese coast.
