British Airways Among Companies that are Calling For Environmental Action
Posted on: September 28th, 2009 by Lynnette AdamsonIt now appears that more than 500 leading global companies are signed up to call for action on climate change ahead of talks on tackling problems in Copenhagen. These environmental talks are set to start in December.
Gordon Brown has pledged to attend the environmental talks to ensure that a deal aimed at avoiding dangerous temperature rises is reached. The Prime Minister is one of the many that believes that something has to be done sooner rather then later.
The Copenhagen Communique, which was unveiled at the UN’s climate summit that took place in New York, is the latest in a series of events that are built around increasing the pressure on world leaders to help secure an agreement on cutting emissions around the world. These are the same gases that contribute to climate change.
The communique, which already has British Airways, EFD, E.ON, BP and Shell on board, warn that failure to secure a deal in Copenhagen will worsen the current economic climate. Failure to not come up with a deal could lead to certain areas actually cutting off trade from other areas until that country reaches their standards. This could cause big problems for many places.
The communique is organized by the Prince of Wales’s corporate leaders group on climate change at the University of Cambridge. They said that economic development will not be sustained in the long term unless climate stability is finally reached. They went on to note that it is very critical that we all exit the current recession with a very firm foundation for low carbon growth. This will avoid locking companies into the fast track to a high carbon future.
