According to British Airways, firms feel like they may be doing the planet a big favor by flying less. British Airways goes on to say that, just before the economic downturn hit, many people were very concerned about the carbon footprint that was being left behind by flying. Now with the economy still down, many businesses are trying to avoid the skies in order to cut down on spending. At the same time, many of them feel that they could be helping the environment at the same time.
The head of UK and Ireland sales at British Airways, Richard Tams, said that his company is very eager to talk with corporate clients about different ways that they could go about helping the planet. He went on to say that there is a danger that the all of this gets lost in the pursuit of cheap pricing, as well as the fact that people are traveling far less than they use to. Of course, other factors play a role as well.
A survey that was done by the Association of Corporate Travel Executives, says that 49.1 percent of companies admit that they have downgraded their class of travel due to the recession. Other companies admit as well that they have cut back on all travel due to the same reason.
Although airline carriers, like British Airways, have been hit hard by the economic downturn, experts say that people cannot forget about the other industries that are suffering as well. The whole travel industry, including cruise lines, hotel chains and many more, have been hit just as hard.
