British Energy share price rises
Posted on: June 22nd, 2008 by Emma YoungThe share price of British Energy rose by over two per cent after word started going round that Centrica would get a minority stake in the nuclear energy producer based in Scotland if it is acquired by Electricité de France or EDF.
The share price of British Energy rose by 15.5 pence or by 2.2 percentage points. The price of the share closed at 706.5 pence at the London bourse. This is the largest rise since the middle of May this year. The share price of Centrica on the other hand declined by 3 pence or by one percentage point to close at 309 pence.
Sources revealed that Centrica and EDF whose control is in the hands of the French government had struck a deal which was acceptable to the United Kingdom. It is understood that the British government is not for the idea of the nuclear energy sector being controlled by one firm. Presently the United Kingdom government has a thirty five per cent shareholding in British Energy.
Electricité de France tabled a deal offering to acquire British Energy at the price of six hundred and eighty pence per share. The total value of British Energy has been put at eleven billion sterling pounds which British Energy has said was too little.
Ever since the British government called for the development of a new generation of nuclear reactors, there has been growing interest in British Energy. BE has eight nuclear reactors and a lot of real estate which is suitable for the development of other nuclear reactors.
