British Energy to raise electricity prices

Posted on: June 4th, 2008 by Emma Young

In the coming twenty four months the cost of electricity for suppliers could go up by over fifty per cent. This was said by the chief executive of British Energy.

This is expected to push the energy costs higher for the consumers since it is expected that the electricity distributors will pass on the cost to their customers.
The chief executive officer of British Energy, Bill Coley, disclosed that nuclear power generation firm had already entered into agreements where they would sell electricity in the year 2010 to 2011 at prices that are fifty per cent more than what is currently the case.

The chief executive officer of British Energy observed that the United Kingdom as a matter of urgency was required to boost its capacity in power generation to avert a power crisis in the future. This was just barely twenty four hours after a power outage affected close to half a million people.

Bill Coley offered that the rising prices of electricity were attributable to the rise in demand for energy in places like China and India which were experiencing robust growth. But he also added that in Britain the problem could also be blamed on the poor state of the country’s power generation facilities.
Interestingly British Energy has one of the worst records when it comes to power station breakdowns. Just a few days ago its biggest nuclear power plant, Sizewell B had to be shut down following an instrument failure.
