British Gas Announces New Solar Panel Scheme

Posted on: August 26th, 2010 by Jenson Brayshaw

Apparently the well known energy company British Gas has just recently launched a new solar panel scheme. According to the energy group, 12 million homeowners could save as much as £1,000. This is because the British Gas scheme takes advantage of the government’s scheme.

The British gas company said that homeowners would be able to save big money if they are to install solar panels on their homes. The firm is the latest in a host of companies offering to install electricity generating systems on homes. Apparently they are doing this to help homeowners take advantage of the government’s scheme.

According to reports, the sudden big allure of solar power is not so much to do with saving the planet, although that is a nice bonus. Apparently people are doing this due to the fact that they can save money with the very lucrative feed in tariffs for every unit of electricity that is generated.

British Gas says that homeowners should be able to make some £1,000 per year off these tariffs. This is just on power that is not used. However, these panels could even be worth more than that. They are guaranteed by the government for 25 years. They are payable via the utility company, and the scheme is suppose to rise in line with inflation.

The energy company has entered into this market with two new schemes of its own. People who opt for its rent-a-roof scheme will see solar panels installed on a home for free. They will benefit from all the electricity they need. The installation will be free, but they will not own the panels, British Gas will, and thus, they get to pocket the money from the tariffs for 25 years.
