Business Travel Could Be Decreased Due to Green Concerns

Posted on: September 17th, 2009 by Beth Williams

It now seems that the long list of environmental concerns for the world will now lead to a decrease in business travel by almost a third. With companies trying to reduce their carbon footprint, experts are now saying that this could all lead to a 12 percent fall in overall travel and meetings for most companies as they strive to do their part for the world.

Alternative technologies look to lead the way for the big eco-friendly push. Things like video conferencing is likely to take the place of things like face-to-face meetings. This means there will be less people traveling and a company can claim that it is leaving behind less of a carbon footprint. Good for the environment, bad for airlines.

For most companies right now, environmental concerns are being pushed down to the bottom of the to-do list. However, this is only because of the current economic downturn. As the economy starts to pick back up, companies will become under increased pressure to do their part for the environment, and more companies will be happy to go along with it once they are financially well off again.

Of course, just what kind of an impact this push to become green will have on the travel industry has yet to be seen. After all, while companies are doing what they can to become environmentally friendly, so are airlines. Many carriers are trying to prove that they can reduce their carbon footprint, and thus, businesses do not have to feel bad to fly. Only time will tell which way this environment problem takes travel for businesses.
