Campaigner Arrested Before Power Station Protest

Posted on: October 19th, 2009 by Tessa Clarke

According to reports, police have now arrested an environmental activist ahead of a protest that was planned for Nottingham coal power station. The unnamed campaigner was apparently picked up on the conspiracy to commit criminal damage charges. It has also come to light that four other climate activists were detained last week for attempting to travel to Copenhagen.

These climate activists, which do include some campaigners from the groups called Climate Camp and Plane Stupid, have pledged to shut down the Ratcliffe on Soar coal power station run by E.ON. The arrest comes just after an injunction was taken out by E.ON against protesters. This will allow police to arrest anyone that enters the plant’s grounds. Thus, a very large police and private security presence is expected to be on the power station site. The site has also increased its own security measures, which does include a new electric fence.

The campaigner that was just recently charged was released on bail. However, he is due to return to the police station on the same day that the protesters are due to take their stand. Although, three other activists, who are understood to have been detained and searched while trying to make it to Copenhagen, are said to have finally completed their journey.

Other activists for the group Plane Stupid claim that they were phoned by the police earlier in the week and told that they would be arrested if they came to the Ratcliffe on Soar site. A spokesperson for the group said that the police were acting like hoodlums, and they were absolutely disgusted with them. However, a spokesperson for the police department said that they would be facilitating lawful protest around the power station and that the activists have already been warned.
