Cell Phones Taking Part in Energy Saving Scheme
Posted on: June 24th, 2009 by Emma YoungIn a German village, mobile phones are being used to help cut down on the village’s energy bills and emissions. This new scheme is called “dial a light”, and it will be using cell phones as a remote control for streetlights.
Right now cell phones can be used as cameras, navigators, music players and much more. Soon cell phones will be able to add saving the planet to their long list of things that they can do. This is going to be done by using cell phones as remote controls for streetlights in a village in central Germany. All of this is being done to help a village control their energy bill.
The way that the scheme works is simple. Residents of Dorentrup, which is just about 60 miles from Hanover, have now been given the ability to turn the village streetlights on when they need them just by making a simple phone call. This Dial4Light scheme has already been in use on many streets around the village for a year. Due to the great success of the plan, they will now be rolling out this new idea to the entire settlement.
All of the 9,000 people that live in Dorentrup will be able to register their details for use in this free system. After registered, the residents will be able to enter a code number that is displayed on a lamp post that will trigger the light to go on within seconds. The lamp will stay on for 15 minutes before it automatically switches off.
The mayor of Dorentrup said that, first and foremost, this scheme saves a lot of money. He says that people are shocked to learn just how much energy these streetlights use over the course of just one night. The lights that are in them are not your normal everyday house lights. These are big lights that use a lot of power. This new system will actually help the community get rid of about 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
