Changes to UK Planning Could Affect Green Buildings

Posted on: December 23rd, 2010 by Justin Becks

The Confederation of British Industry has now suggested that changes to UK planning, the CEC energy efficiency scheme and the energy market reform could affect the progress of low-carbon buildings. Due to these changes, investors are now starting to show signs of uncertainty.

The Confederation of British Industry has just recently published its latest Climate Change Tracker. This shows that only nuclear energy is on track for progress in de-carbonizing four areas. These four areas are power, buildings, transport and industry.

This report shows that homes, buildings and industry were found to be “red.” This means that little progress has been made in making these areas more energy efficient. This is not the kind of thing that the UK wants to see.

The CBI director general, John Cridland, said that an effective planning system is at the heart of building the low-carbon infrastructure needed to transform the UK economy. At the same time, the businesses that have taken steps to cut their emissions should be rewarded, not penalized. That is why the CRC needs to change to ensure that it is an incentive for action. The government has great green ambition. However, it needs to see swift action if it has any hope of fulfilling its green promise.

The UK has come up with some very ambitious plans in terms of cutting CO2. However, coming up with plans is not enough. The government has to take action in order to make these plans come true. This is one of those areas where talk is worthless. The only way anything can get done is through action.
