As the race to construct a new generation of nuclear plants heats up, a consortium of firms from Japan and the United States is putting up a bid to build two nuclear power generating plants in Essex and Gloucestershire. The specific locations are Oldbury in Gloucesterhire and Bradwell in Essex.

One of the companies is known as Energy Solutions and is headquartered in Salt Lake City in the state of Utah and specialises in offering nuclear services. The other company from Japan is known as Toshiba-Westinghouse. On another proposed new nuclear power plant in North Wales the two firms are already partners.

Each one of the two locations for the new nuclear plants are on Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s land. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority is the government body charged with the responsibility of cleaning up the current nuclear power plants in Britain.

Already the consortium has been in discussions with utilities from Britain and Europe as well to look into the possibilities of forming a partnership for the construction of the new nuclear power facilities. The government has estimated that each of the plants will require an investment of approximately 2.8 billion pounds.

At the Bradwell location in Essex, there are twenty hectares available. The nuclear plant there was decommissioned six years ago. At the Oldbury location in Gloucestershire on the other hand there are over fifty one hectares of land and the nuclear plant there will be decommissioned this year.

This comes in the wake of the bidding deadline for British Energy which has eight nuclear sites throughout the United Kingdom.
