Cornwall Council Approves 20 Turbine Wind Farm at Davidstowe Woods

Posted on: October 15th, 2009 by Tessa Clarke

The Cornwall Council has approved a permit for 20 onshore wind turbines to be constructed in the Davidstowe Woods. The turbines will tower over two times higher than Nelson’s Column at 126m.

The project plans had been rejected at a prior submission date, and have been the cause of large controversy in the area with local residents concerned that the large towers will blemish the natural beauty of the area.

Community Windpower, the energy company behind the project, has said that they are thrilled at the approval of the £54 million turbine project. To others, the announcement comes as a bit of a shock as dozens of protests groups had submitted documents arguing against the project going ahead.

John Lugg, a Cornwall council member from Delabole, said that the Cornwall Council had let down the locals, as it was clear a majority of the residents are against it, however, he said, these people’s pleas for rejection of the proposal were ignored.

Rob Fryer, Community Windpower’s project director, has said that he is delighted that Cornwall council is allowing the building plans to go forward, because it will help support further renewable energy developments in the region.
