Didcot Power Protesters Spend Another Night on Power Station Chimney
Posted on: October 28th, 2009 by Emma YoungIt now seems that the activists that went up to the top of the Didcot power station’s chimney as a type of protest say that they plan on staying up on the chimney for a week. Right now the protesters are camped out on top of the chimney that stands 600 feet in the air.
Reports point out that they believe there are nine climate protesters at the top of this power station’s chimney. The protesters all plan on staying up on the chimney for a week, and just recently they spent their second night 600 feet in the air.
Thirteen other protesters, who also broke into Didcot power station in Oxfordshire, have already been arrested and removed from the coal conveyor belt that they locked themselves into. A spokesman for the protesters said that they have been served an injunction but are refusing to come down. Thus, they are in contempt of court.
The protesters, who are staying in pitched tents on the top of the chimney, were seen celebrating their victory over the power station by making them switch from burning coal to gas during the occupation. It is said, by burning coal, the 2,000MW power station normally emits about 5 million tonnes of CO2 a year. Natural gas, which they are using right now while the protesters are atop of the chimney, is considerably clearer than burning coal.
It is not yet known when they well choose to bring down the protesters or if they will be left up their to serve out their one week plan. More information on this story will likely come up later this week.
