Dong Energy Withdraws From Power Station
Posted on: October 16th, 2009 by Jason DrewNew reports now show that Dong Energy has withdrawn from a 1.6GW Hunterston power station scheme. This new report comes just a few days after E.ON chose to shelve its Kingsnorth power station as well.
The plans for a new generation of clean coal power stations have been dealt many blows over the past few days. Dong Energy went on to say that it was withdrawing from the 1.6GW Hunterston power station scheme as well as another coal fired plant in Germany. They are choosing to do this to focus on their efforts for more green energy and cutting CO2 emissions.
These new decisions raise even more doubts about the future of the Scottish and UK government’s plans to invest a lot of money into clean coal plants. E.ON had cited that the reason for it shelving its plans for the coal station was due to the recession.
Dong Energy, which brands itself as a very climate friendly power company, said that the economics of coal were just way too difficult to invest in right now. This just goes to show that the recession is taking its toll on all types of companies, not just the travel industry.
The Scottish campaigner for the World Development Movement, Liz Murray, says that it’s very clear that dirty coal is a very risky investment. Energy companies are now starting to see that, and they can no longer justify the investment. Companies will only invest in things that have a feature, and it appears that coal’s feature is looking as black as the color it turns the environment.
