easyJet Looks to Save on Fuel With New Nanotechnology Paint
Posted on: February 16th, 2011 by Jason DrewIt is no secret that airlines around the world are doing whatever they can to save money on fuel. In fact, back not too long ago, Japan Airlines was asking people to use the bathroom before they got on the plane in order to cut down on weight and, thus, save on fuel. However, it now appears that easyJet has come up with their own idea.
Apparently the airline is claiming to be the world’s first commercial airline to use a new kind of nanotechnology paint. The whole goal of this paint is actually suppose to help reduce air drag on the plane. If this is in fact true, then it would in turn increase the fuel efficiency of the plane and cut down on emissions.
Of course, this paint is not brand new. In fact, the paint has been used by the United States military for the past 20 years. This “nano paint” creates a perfectly smooth surface unlike other paint. It fills in all of the paint “pores” that other paints leave behind. This reduces the build up of debris on the plane’s surface and creates less drag.
eEasyJet, which is based in Luton, said that this ultra thin coating could help to increase the fuel efficiency of their planes by 2 percent. After applying this paint, the airline is going to compare fuel consumption with the rest of its fleet over a 12 month trial. If they get the results that they want, then the airline will continue applying this paint to all of its planes.
The chief executive of easyJet, Carolyn McCall, said that they can find new ways to reduce the amount of fuel used by their planes. By doing this, they are very easily able to pass the savings on to the consumer.
