Edinburgh Makes Plans for New Energy from Waste Plant
Posted on: May 8th, 2009 by Tessa ClarkeNew plans are being made for a large incinerator that will help to convert waste into energy. This is a new plan that could benefit thousands of homes in Edinburgh by supplying them with renewable energy.
The project calls for an incinerator that is large enough to be able to burn about 200,000 tonnes of waste a year. This is about the same amount of waste that is made from the capital itself during the same time span. Thus, it’s almost as if the city would be producing its own energy source.
The new energy from the waste plant is expected to cost the city around £100 million. City officials say that they will consider a private finance initiative to fund the construction of the incinerator.
The Midlothian Council cabinet member for the strategic services, Russell Imire, said that the energy from waste idea is very interesting. He went on to say that the city does need to consider all of the factors. This includes trafficking into the site, as well as the environmental considerations.
Energy from waste is a very hot topic right now. There are many who support it, and many who do not. Some say that energy from waste is a good idea, because landfills are filling up and people can now use this waste to solve the energy problem. Others say that energy from waste is just going to increase the carbon footprint.
Energos has already been given the go ahead for a £40 million incinerator project near Merseyside village of Knowsley. The go ahead was given despite the local opposition at the project site.
