EGAT Proposes New Sustainable Energy Program

Posted on: July 30th, 2009 by Tessa Clarke

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has just announced plans to spend THB 22 billion [US $644 million] to fund new projects in sustainable energy via the construction of renewable energy power plants.

The funding, provided directly by EGAT, will see the completion of sustainable energy power plants which will have a joint capacity of 258MW once fully operating.

The plan will be carried out in the three phases.  The first phase having begun last year will see completion in 2012 and consist of laying a foundation of 102MW of renewable energy, 20.5 MW of which would be wind turbine engineered.

The second phase will commence in 2013 and would provide an additional 78MW of renewable energy, 13MW of which would again be provided for by wind power. An additional 2MW would be generated by solar power, and another 55.5 MW from hydropower.  The second phase would ideally be completed by 2017 making the way for the third and final phase of the proposal.

The third and last phase would see the remaining 79MW generated froma combiniation of wind power, solar power, waste, and hydro power. The aim of the proposal is to catapult Thailand into more sustainable forms of energy, which are currently not being pursued as aggressively as in other areas around the world.
