Elderly People in UK Concerned Over Energy Cost

Posted on: January 21st, 2010 by Tessa Clarke

New reports now suggest that elderly people living in the UK are very worried about the cost of post free gas and electricity bills. Some experts point out that this certain group of people has a reason to be worried.

Age Concern, a charity, believes that the recent rise in inflation, coupled with the inevitable expense of higher heating bills, could mean that some elderly members of the population could have to struggle just to pay their bills every month. This has a lot to do with the fact that elderly people are on a very fixed income every month.

The Institute for Public Policy Research also called on the government this week to do more to help this very vulnerable group of people from the rising cost of power. They believe that the current measures are not adequately addressing the kind of problem that they are experiencing.

The head of policies at Age Concern and Help the Aged, Andrew Harrop, said that many older people are on low incomes and will dread the bounce back of inflation. They are already bracing for a round of post freeze energy bills. Many are worrying about whether their incomes will stretch to meet essential costs over the coming months. It’s not right that these members of the community should have to worry about having power and being able to pay their bills.

Many experts are saying that the best advice that they can give right now is for people to compare and switch energy suppliers to make sure that they are getting the best deal. Many people could be paying too much as it is.
