Energy Consumers in Rented Homes Should Switch Power Providers
Posted on: August 10th, 2009 by Beth WilliamsAs most people already know, homes that are in the private rented sector are normally not the most energy efficient homes people can find. On top of this, renters are normally pretty reluctant to carryout any kind of home improvement on properties that they do not even own. Thus, the best way for people living in rented homes to save power is to consider switching power suppliers.
Although the government’s key advisory on energy saving, the Energy Saving Trust, claims that they are going to be cracking down on landlords to ensure that they are offering energy efficient properties, it would appear as little to no action is taking place. Thus, it is up to consumers to take matters into their own hands. This can be done by hunting down the cheapest energy tariff and comparing energy prices online.
The Energy Saving Trust did say that they would like to see authorities use environment health regulations to tackle the really bad insulated homes. They went on to say that they need a powerful incentive to act as a backstop in case other measures do not work. However, for the time being this is mostly talk.
Some new research by the Energy Saving Trust has already shown that households in the London borough of Enfield could be throwing away almost £4.5 million a year in wasted energy. This is bad news for the UK government, as their major aim right now is to make the UK more energy efficient. More steps are being taken to reach the UK’s carbon emissions goals, but experts point out that the government, companies and homeowners all have to work together to reach these goals.
