Energy Ratings For Homes Are Good For Buyers
Posted on: August 20th, 2010 by Emma YoungReports are now suggesting that new home energy ratings will help to benefit home buyers. This is because it provides clear information that people can use to make a judgment about a property they are considering to buy. For some people, having a high energy rating could be the selling point for a house. On that same note, not having a high energy rating could be a deal breaker.
The sustainability and communications director of Sustain, Gordon Miller, shares the view that energy ratings are a good thing for home buyers. He says that although many buyers will still focus on location and the cost of the property, they will start to look at issues such as energy efficiency as well. People are becoming more aware of the benefits of energy efficiency and how much money it can save them. In his opinion, the public is definitely switching on to it more and more.
Starting in 2012, new European Union legislation will come into force that requires all home sellers to publish the energy efficiency rating of their property. Currently, energy performance certificates can be provided later in the selling process.
Although Miller feels that, overall, these new energy ratings will be a good thing, he does point out that it may not be all good. He did note that the new law could end up being a burden and more expensive for the seller.
So overall, what people are looking at here is that this new law will be good for the buyer and possibly bad for the seller. This goes double for sellers that are not building energy efficient homes, as their rating will be provided to the seller.
