Energy Sector to pursue nuclear resurgence
Posted on: August 11th, 2008 by Jenson BrayshawSamir Brikho, CEO of Amec, is enthusiastic about working on one of the biggest nuclear energy power projects in UK. Amec is a constituent of consortium currently vying for Sellafield nuclear power plant. Sellafield is Britain’s major nuclear reprocessing plant. Mr. Brikho emphasized the necessity of developing nuclear power capabilities for cutting down the carbon emissions. He said that no serious steps can be taken on this front until or unless major work is carried out for developing nuclear power.
Amec is heavily involved in nuclear energy and is currently employing over 1300 nuclear engineers in UK alone. It already owns a share in British energy and bought this stake three years back. Moreover, it is also setting up a facility in North America. Firm is also involved in reviving two nuclear energy power plants in Canada.
Mr. Brikho is also optimistic that EDF-British Energy debacle would not cause any impediment in UK’s nuclear power revival program. Sellafield project is expected to worth approximate £1.3 Billion per year to the consortium. This consortium consists of Areva, URS and Amec. Project is initially slated for 5 years, however, there is a clause for extending it for additional 17 years. According to Brikho, Governmental empathy towards nuclear energy as a part of energy mix is very important. He praised the government for sending out a clear message of support for nuclear energy.
Mr. Brikho stressed the development of nuclear power as a substitute for oil. He stated that UK is on the verge of experiencing energy renaissance and that he is proud that his firm will have a major role to play in this process.
