Environment Agency says Water Efficiency Can Reduce Carbon Footprint
Posted on: July 27th, 2009 by Beth WilliamsNew studies have now shown that a household can really reduce its carbon footprint by becoming a lot more efficient in its use of water. This is a new idea that comes from the Environment Agency, which is always looking into new ways for people to reduce their carbon footprint.
The Environment Agency went on to say that one thing that households can do to make sure they are using water efficiently would be to make sure they have no leaks in their piping system. They did note that there are certain boilers that homes can use to help improve the energy use in their home.
This new information calls on the government to review its regulatory framework surrounding hot water systems. It also forces planners and developers to include water efficiency measures into their energy saving initiatives.
The Environment Agency’s head of water, Ian Barker, said that water is a very precious resource, and as the government outlined in last Weeks’s Low Carbon Transition Plan, we all need to urgently cut carbon emissions to reduce the impact on our future. We have now found out that this is something that can be done with water efficiency.
Right now, nearly six percent of the UK’s annual carbon emissions is actually related to water use. Nearly 90 percent of that six percent is related to hot water used in the home. Ian Barker said that it’s very clear that we need to find a way to be smarter with the way that we use our hot water systems. This could actually help UK businesses save £3.5 billion a year.
