E.ON in Join Venture to Boost Cheap Electricity

Posted on: April 2nd, 2010 by Tessa Clarke

Apparently a new nuclear development program has just recently been announced. This new program could increase the availability of cheap electricity for businesses all over the UK.

The Horizon Nuclear Power, which is a joint venture between E.ON and RWE npower, has revealed plans to build two new nuclear power stations. If all goes according to plan, then this set will be ready for use by 2020.

Wylfa on the Isle of Angelsey has been chosen as the first site. A planning application has been scheduled to be submitted in two year’s time. Once the work there has started, Horizon Nuclear Power will then turn its attention to building a power station at Oldbury on Severn in Gloucestershire.

Both of the stations will have the capacity of up to 3,300mw. The operating officer at Horizon Nuclear Power, Alan Raymant, said that they would have numerous advantages for the UK. He said that new nuclear power would make a vital contribution to meeting the country’s energy needs and tackling the challenges of climate change.

According to the firm, nuclear power will play a very key role in the challenges of supplying cheap electricity to the UK. Since this new project was just recently announced it will take some time for any critics to state their minds on the matter.

Although these nuclear power stations could bring cheap energy to the UK, it is likely that some environmentalists are going to be unhappy about this move. The project itself is still 10 years away from being finished, and this will more than likely not be the last news that people hear about it.
