E.ON to invest in Denmark’s wind project
Posted on: May 7th, 2008 by Lynnette AdamsonE.ON has been granted the go ahead to construct Rödsand II, a big offshore wind power generation project in Denmark. The wind farm is expected to be complete by the year 2010 and it will be the biggest wind power generating project ever undertaken by E.ON.
Approximately two hundred megawatts will be generated by the Rödsand II wind project which is the equivalent of what two hundred thousand homes consume. The total electricity demand in Denmark is around ten gigawatts.
The wind power project will cost around four hundred million Euros. E.ON already owns part of the Rödsand I power project which generates approximately one hundred and sixty megawatts. Rödsand I and Rödsand II are separated by a distance of three kilometres.
The Chief Executive Officer of E.ON, Wulf H. Bernotat disclosed that the German energy giant was going to put in six billion Euros to the renewable energies industry by the year 2010.
Since E.ON acquired wind energy firms such as Airtricity in the United States and E2 Renovables Ibéricas of Spain in 2007, it has emerged as the 7th biggest firm in the wind power generation sector throughout the world.
The Rödsand II wind power scheme will be handled by the E.ON subsidiary, E.ON Climate and Renewables which was formed to focus on the group’s renewable energy initiatives throughout the world.
Over two years ago E.ON, in partnership with Dong, had tendered successfully for the Rödsand II project but an adverse economic climate forced it to pull out in December 2007. A new bidding process was thereafter instituted by the Danish Energy Board in February this year where E.ON has once again won the bid.
