E.ON UK CEO Predicts Long-Term Rise in Home Utility Bills
Posted on: January 28th, 2008 by adminThe chief executive of E.ON UK, Paul Golby, expressed his opinion on Tuesday that household energy bills must rise while energy companies must make radical changes in the way they do business to combat climate change.
Golby also stated that E.ON UK was interested in participating in “more than one” new nuclear power station in the UK. He added that windpower would be the main focus of a 1 billion pound ($1.95 billion) investment programme in low-carbon energy over the next five years.
“The time of a cheap energy world is over,” he commented. “We have to start treating energy differently. Quite frankly, we waste an inordinate amount. We need to get to where wasting energy is seen almost as the crime it is.”
Golby also said companies would have to fundamentally change their way of doing business, not just build more low CO2 power plants and pass on the cost to consumers. Britain must decentralise its energy networks. In addition, energy companies should start teaming with property companies to provide electricity at a local level.”
“Our business model is based on selling kilowatt hours of electricity or therms of gas,” he explained. “We need to find a different model.”
Golby asked the question,”If I could spend 2 billion pounds on making people’s homes more energy efficient and still make a decent return, rather than spending 2 billion pounds on a nuclear power station, why wouldn’t I?”
