European Union Sees Businesses Wanting to Increase CO2 Targets

Posted on: July 23rd, 2010 by Jenson Brayshaw

In an odd shift, it now seems that the European Union is seeing an increasing demand from businesses to increase their CO2 targets. In fact, executives from organizations like Asda and Vodafone wrote to ministers recently urging them to lobby European Union authorities to raise targets.

In a recent letter that was just published, the companies go on to explain that increasing official targets makes good business sense. They said that this will place European nations in a strong and competitive position to take on the clean energy market.

The companies went on to add that the European Union’s future competitive advantage lies in encouraging and enabling its businesses to help drive the transformation into a more clean form of energy. It benefits the UK to embrace this and not try to avoid it.

Just earlier this week, the climate change secretary, Chris Huhne, called on Europe to increase its CO2 reduction targets. Apparently he wanted the targets to be reduced from just 20 percent to 30 percent by 2020. If implemented, it would still be lower than the UK’s target of 34 percent reduction in emissions by the end of the decade.

As of right now, it is looking like lots of people in the UK want to do their part in making sure that carbon emissions get lowered. Homeowners all over the UK are trying to do their part as well, not just businesses. However, some groups still fear that people are not doing enough or the efforts now could be too little too late. People would have to make big changes to get the planet back on track.
