Flats generating their own electricity
Posted on: June 17th, 2008 by Tessa ClarkeA set of 5 low-rise blocks of flats are generating their own electricity from renewable energy sources. The flats belong to the Caldmore Area Housing Association which is at the periphery of Walsall.
The five refurbished flats at Newmore Gardens have had solar photovoltaic panels installed on their roofs with the intention of generating electricity from the sun. The power which is harnessed from the sun is then used to light communal areas.
The Caldmore Area Housing Association is also in talks with Green Energy UK to look into ways of selling the surplus electricity for the benefit of other enterprises and households. Green Energy UK is an electricity supplier and one hundred per cent of the electricity it supplies is generated from renewable energy sources.
Walsall Housing Groups Mark Bird and Caldmore Area Housing Associations head of asset management, Richard Barratt were in charge of the talks which have proved successful.
The founder and chief executive of Green Energy UK, Doug Stewart is quoted as saying that the good thing about the power generated from the Caldmore Area Housing Association flats was that it was renewable energy and from a source widely considered the best and green form of electricity available in the world today. Mr. Stewart added that the excess electricity would be used by other people who want electricity from renewable sources. He further added that the huge capacity installed at Caldmore Area Housing Association flats made exporting it to other households and enterprises economically viable.
Besides solar power Green Energy UK provides renewable energy from other sources including electricity generated from biowaste.
