Friends of the Earth Say that Green Budget Cuts Could Save Billions
Posted on: June 21st, 2010 by Jenson BrayshawApparently, billions of pounds could be cut from the budget deficit in the UK. This could be done by taking a more environmentally friendly approach to budget cuts. According to Friends of the Earth, a well known green group, this money could be easy to save.
Friends of the Earth have urged the chancellor to help deliver on prime minister David Chameron’s pledge to lead the greenest government ever. The group suggested ditching proposals for expensive new roads in the UK. This would save some £4.5 billion in public spending. The charity went on to claim that investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency would help to create more jobs. It would help the economy of the UK overall.
The executive director of Friends of the Earth, Andy Atkins, said that increasing taxes on pollution can reduce the need for spending cuts to front line services. The percentage of taxes coming from pollution is lower now than back in 1997. The cost of switching to a low carbon economy now is far less than the bill they face if they delay the action on climate change.
However, the Friends of the Earth did not stop there. They have also called on the coalition government to set up the promised green investment bank within a year.
Right now, green groups like Friends of the Earth have more power than they use to. This is because people are paying much more attention to carbon emissions. People want to do their job to save the planet and, thus, these groups are watched and listen to a lot more.
