Glasgow announced plans to become green city

Posted on: January 28th, 2010 by Jason Drew

A recent announcement was made on the planned transformation of Glasgow into one of Europe’s eco-friendly cities.

The Sustainable Glasgow report laid down means on how to lower carbon emissions down and be able to meet energy needs of the future. It also proposed projects on district heating, renewable energy, sustainable transportation, biogas, biomass, smart grids and energy management. The report estimated as well that green projects will bring £1.5 billion fresh investments to the metropolitan within the next 10 years.

The city transformation plan was conceptualized by Sustainable Glasgow, a consortium guided by the University of Strathclyde (UoS). Some of the project partners include Scottish and Southern Energy, Veolia, Clancy and Company, Scottish Enterprise, Blitzer, and the Glasgow City Council. The environmental project aspires to convert the city into a main hub of the sustainable energy industry, which in turn helps create green jobs.

The report also recommended building of facilities that can turn the city’s waste and sewage into biogas, and the creation of woodlands on unoccupied city lands. Plans to build a district heating system, and to discontinue the use of electric, oil and coal heating systems were also emphasized.

The funding for the projects will mainly come from a number of commercial organizations. Professor Jim McDonald, principal of UoS, said that Scotland has huge opportunity to be a global leader in renewable energy technologies. He added that innovative research has a critical role in securing the future of UK’s energy and in driving down greenhouse gas emissions.
