Google Installs New Google Earth Feature Which Follows Climate Change

Posted on: September 28th, 2009 by Jenson Brayshaw

A new feature on Google Earth™ allows users to look up how climate change is affecting the atmosphere in their hometowns. The newly available feature allows Google users to look up climate change under three separate scenarious: Confronting Climate Change, a feature with Al Gore, IPCC High Emissions data, and IPCC Low Emissions data.

Other aspects of the feature allow for other, more in depth looks at global climate change and regional climate change. The change comes in anticipation for the UN climate conference to be held in Copenhagen in December. Additional tools have been implemented into the site to help users learn how to adapt to climate change.

The new feature, backed by Al Gore as the celebrity face for the campaign, is also aimed at raising awareness on practical measures which can reduce climate change such as decreased reliance on fossil fuels as an energy source.

Founders of Google™, Benjamin Kott and Jonas Vang, have said that the data is drawn from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change or the IPCC, and is a comprehensive look on global climate conditions.

Google is attempting to help boost awareness about climate change and the upcoming UN talks in Copenhagen. The company has also launched a campaign on their subsidiary, Youtube.com, called the You Tube COP15 Channel, which features ads and media on climate change issues.

The tools were also developed as a practical tool for businesses and individuals to follow global climate change and watch out for changes which will affect them individually and business wise.
