Google to Pump £25.6 million into Wind Power

Posted on: May 11th, 2010 by Samantha Donovan

Apparently the internet search giant Google has just announced that it will now invest up to £25.6 million (or $39 million) into wind farms. This giant has already expanded into the mobile phone and maps of the world business. Now it wants to try its hand in another market.

The plan right now is for the company to pump this money into two North Dakota wind farms. However, this does not rule out the chances that they could invest in more wind farms at a later date. This could also inspire other companies around the world, including those in the UK, to invest more money into wind farms as well.

This will market Google’s first direct investment in a large scale green energy project. Google said that the wind farms, developed by NextEra Energy Resources, will generate enough electricity to power about 55,000 homes.

This is kind of a major shift for Google’s original strategy. The company previously sought to invest in renewable energy via start ups. Google’s green business operations manager, Rick Needham, said to reach a clean energy future, people need three things. They need effective policies, innovative technology, and smart capital. Google believes they have been pushing for energy policies that strengthen the innovation pipeline, and the company has been dedicating resources to the development of new technologies.

He did go on to say that bigger projects, such as the wind farms, will help to accelerate the development of the latest clean energy technology while providing attractive returns to Google and even more capital for developers to build additional projects. Overall, this should prove to be a win, win situation for everyone.
