Green Meters to be Fitted on a Number of Homes in the UK

Posted on: March 8th, 2011 by Samantha Donovan

A number of homeowners around the UK are being encouraged to keep track of just how much heat that they produce from sustainable fuels. This could easily be done by having energy meters installed on homes.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change is now offering a £4 billion initiative to get more homeowners on board. It is being called the Renewable Heat Incentive. Apparently the scheme will see cash being offered to home owners, businesses and other public buildings that install these special energy meters.

So just how does it work? Well apparently people will be offered cash for a certain amount of heat that is produced from sustainable fuels. This is something that the meters can, of course, calculate very easily.

The minister who is in charge of the project, Greg Barker, said that measuring just how much heat someone saves is rather hard to measure on a domestic scale. That is why people are being encouraged to install these green meters.

The chief executive of the National Grid, Steve Holliday, said that 2011 is going to be a very important year for the UK to reach its emission targets. Overall all, this year is very pivotal. People will have a better idea by the end of this year if the UK will be able to meet its goals or not.

Whether people are just looking to do their part for the environment or are looking to make a little money, this new scheme could be perfect for them. Not only will people be able to do the right thing, but they can make a little extra cash in the process.
