Green Party issues warning over nuclear power stations

Posted on: March 31st, 2008 by Emma Young

The Green Party in North Staffordshire is up in arms over what it claims are possible plans for the construction of a nuclear power station in the county.

The party spokesperson, Prof. Andrew Dobson, recalled the Secretary of State for Business and Enterprise outlining the government’s plans to encourage the development of more nuclear reactors in the United Kingdom. Prof. Dobson further added that one of the possible sites for a new nuclear reactor was in Rugeley, Staffordshire.

The Green Party demanded an end to nuclear power in the United Kingdom arguing that it was costly and risky and posed dangers to people’s health, to the environment and to the economy.

With plans also afoot to make Staffordshire an area for burning most of the waste generated in the West Midlands, the Green Party was concerned that Staffordshire would be stereotyped as a filthy and harmful place to live in.

Elsewhere ESB International is putting money in a tidal energy project that will see the installation of the world’s first commercial scale tidal power generating device in Northern Ireland. ESB International’s investment in Marine Current Turbines, which is the firm that designed and built the tidal stream device called as SeaGen, is four million euros.

Marine Current Turbines was started in 2002 and is a global market leader in the manufacture of tidal current turbines. ESB International’s investment in Marine Current Turbines is thus a testament to its continued commitment to the development of technologies for the renewable energy sources sector.
