Hydro-electricity project raises furore
Posted on: July 7th, 2008 by Samantha DonovanA plan to develop a hydro-electricity project at Romney Weir has raised a furore amongst the residents of Eton. At an information evening which had been coordinated by npower renewables, the locals expressed their fears saying that the scheme would have a negative visual impact on the area some of which is residential. The residents are also worried that the project would lead to noise pollution while at the same time it would not be benefiting the people of that region.
Gill Clark, a householder in Riverside revealed that she was not happy that Npower Renewables was going to develop the project in an area that was occupied by residential houses.
At the information evening which was held at the town council debate became heated with Gill Clark wondering why Npower Renewables had chosen a residential area of all places. She argued that the locals would not benefit from having the project in their backyard but they would end up paying a heavy price.
Should Npower Renewables get the go-ahead for the project from the Royal Borough the project could be operational by the year 2009. The project has a capacity to generate close to one and a half million kilowatt hours of electricity on an annual basis. This is enough to meet the electricity requirements of three hundred homes. But most of the electricity that is going to be produced will most likely be channelled for use at the Windsor castle.
Amidst the protests Npower Renewables officials said they had met all the necessary conditions.
