Injet offers carbon offsetting option to jetsetters
Posted on: November 23rd, 2009 by adminInjet, a company which offers private jet services, is now allowing businesses and individuals to offset the emissions of their air travels. Supported by TerraPass, Inject’s newly developed green programme lets passengers to choose from various carbon offsetting models depending on the size of the jet. Terrapass is planning to invest the proceeds of the scheme to wind farm projects.
The company regularly sells its services in 25-hour blocks. Offsetting 50 metric tonnes of carbon emissions from a 25-hour service on a light jet would charge $781; while the same air travel on a medium jet, which produces 62.5 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide, would cost $945. Similarly, the offset cost would climb to $1,765 on a heavy jet, which generates 125 metric tonnes of emissions.
European private jet airline company, Jet Republic, is also providing costumers on its Learjet 60 XR business jets with carbon emission offsetting service. Based on a fee per flight hour mechanism, offsetting can be done through the purchase of Verified Emission Reduction credits from ClimateCare, a JP Morgan division.
In other related news, one of the original travel agencies to give air travellers the choice to offset flight emissions had stopped offering the service. Justin Francis, Managing Director of Responsible Travel, said that carbon offsetting has many pitfalls and it diverts travellers from the need to lessen their carbon footprint.
The UK-based Responsible Travel had provided the offsetting service way back in 2002. The travel company believes that reducing emissions in the air travel industry is the best approach to address global emissions, instead of offsetting them.
